Jazz Ensemble
The GSU Jazz Ensemble performs a varied repertoire of music composed and arranged for the big band idiom. The purpose of this is to give the musicians a diverse experience of all kinds of music played by various big bands throughout the years, to help prepare music majors to teach about jazz, and to help prepare students for a professional or semi-professional career as a musician.
Membership in the jazz ensemble is open to all GSU students, not just music majors; in fact, alumni and faculty have performed with the group from time to time. The Jazz Ensemble generally performs one concert near the conclusion of each semester and occasionally performs off campus. Guest artists are sometimes featured with the group; for example, nationally-known composer and bandleader Alan Baylock served as guest conductor of the Spring 2011 concert.
