In the wake of finding out our final five presidential candidates The Phoenix thought it best to find out what it is the students on campus are looking for in their new college president. The questions asked were: How closely are you following the campus presidential selection and what qualities do you believe our new president should possess.
When asked these questions, Freshman Dori Yoho replied, “I follow everything pretty closely; I try to stay in the loop with things that are happening on campus. I think it’s important to know who will potentially be representing our college. As for qualities, they should have personal skills, a great attitude, a positive outlook, and connectivity with those they encounter.”
To follow, Sophomore JD Guerrero states that he also follows the candidate search, but not as closely as he would like. He believes that he “should read up more.” However, this didn’t keep him from forming his own opinion on the matter. He believes that the president should have "strong leadership skills, must be good with people, and be creative.”
Two Juniors continue on to give their opinions on the matter; one of which was Aric Braley. Aric says that since he is a non-traditional student, it is much harder for him to stay informed and speak for the students who live on campus. When asked how closely he follows the elections, he stated “Not very, I commute for an hour and a half every day so I don’t really pay much attention. I do believe that they should be friendly and social and be helpful to the students if they need it though.”
The other, Jacob Stout, had a simple response to the questions. “The president needs to be willing to put up with resilient peers. They should be happy and willing to hang out with the students.” When discussing what he wanted out of a new president, he liked how former president Tracy Pellett interacted with the students on campus and would like to see that again.
Lastly, claimed Senior Fairan Gill states that she doesn’t really have much time to keep up with everything, given her course load and practice hours. However, like JD, she also formed her own opinions. “The president should have integrity, transparency, and for the library and its books to be treated like a priority.”
