Clark Jr. and Marjorie Hardman Scholarship
Established 2010
This scholarship was established in 2010 by Mr. D. Stephen Hardman to honor the memory of his parents. It also recognizes the important part GSU played in his parents’ education and their life’s pursuits and accomplishments. This scholarship shall be awarded by the Land Resources Department. First preference will be given to WV residents. The award shall be made to a student beginning their sophomore year that has displayed high academic achievement and has an identified need for financial assistance.
Cody Mullens Forest Technology Scholarship
Established 2023
The Cody Mullens Forest Technology scholarship aims to support a student interested in pursuing a degree in Forest Technology through Glenville State’s Department of Land Resources. The scholarship was established in 2023 in honor of Cody Mullens who was a 2019 Glenville State graduate and was employed as a Forester with the West Virginia Division of Forestry. In April 2023, Cody was tragically killed in the line of duty while fighting a forest fire in Fayette County.
Dominion - Stan Pickens Scholarship
Established 1999
This scholarship has been established by Dominion Resources to honor Stan Pickens, a 1960 graduate and former CEO of Dominion Appalachian Development Inc. The company also wishes to recognize Glenville State University for its service to rural, central West Virginia, the heart of the Mountain State’s oil and gas industry. Preference is given to employees or dependents of employees of the oil and gas industry, and is targeted toward developing a talented and committed workforce for that industry. Secondary preference is given to any student with a concentration in Natural Resources.
Eberly Forestry Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a Forestry major.
Ed Grafton Forestry Scholarship
Established 2009
The Ed Grafton Forestry Scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student who is a freshman, sophomore or junior in the Forest Technology program at Glenville State University. The scholarship is named after Dr. Ed Grafton who taught forestry courses at the Department of Land Resources for 34 years. The student should have a GPA of 3.0 at the time of application. Recipient of the scholarship will be selected by the faculty and staff of the Department of Land Resources.
Gregory A. Smith Scholarship
Established 2009
This scholarship was established by Mr. Gregory A. Smith, a 1976 GSU Alum and Glenville businessman, to benefit GSU students with the declared major of Land Surveying. Scholarship recipients will be selected annually by a committee comprised of Mr. Smith, the Department of Land Resources Chair and the Head Instructor of Land Surveying. Preference shall be given to students in the GSU service area and then to students in the central West Virginia area.
J.B. Bialek Memorial Scholarship
Established 2006
Established by Jim Bialek with contributions from friends and family in memory of J.B. Bialek. This scholarship will be used to provide an annual scholarship to a student in the Forestry major at Glenville State University who will be selected by the faculty of the Department of Land Resources.
J.C. Baker Memorial Scholarship
Established 2004
The J.C. Baker Memorial Scholarship was established by the family of J.C. Baker, a resident of Braxton County, a pioneer in the oil and gas industry, and a supporter of higher education. The scholarships will be awarded to Natural Resource Management students from West Virginia.
John Scott Bailey Memorial Scholarship
Established 2003
Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Bailey endowed this scholarship, with contributions from family and friends, as a lasting tribute to John Scott Bailey, a 1975 graduate from GSU. This scholarship provides support to students majoring in Land Resources, with preference given to those students who reside in Glenville’s surrounding counties: Barbour, Braxton, Calhoun, Clay, Gilmer, Lewis, Nicholas, Roane, Upshur and Webster.
Kenneth and Irene Walker Scholarship
Established 2006
This scholarship is established, by anonymous donors, in honor of an Appalachian sharecropper’s son and his immigrant wife who created a great life for their children by showing what one can do through love and hard work. Its purpose will be to support scholarships for students from the Rosedale, West Virginia area who are pursuing a degree in either music (first preference) or Natural Resource Management at Glenville State University.
Lyndsee Gay NRMT Scholarship
Established 2021
The Lyndsee Gay NRMT Scholarship was established in 2021 and is awarded annually to a deserving student in the Natural Resource Management program at Glenville State University. This scholarship was established to honor Lyndsee Gay, a Natural Resource Management and Forest Technology grad who died from a tragic accident in 2018. The student should have a minimum GPA of 2.5 at the time of application. Recipient of the scholarship will be selected by the faculty and staff of the Department of Land Resources.
Rick Sypolt Land Surveying Scholarship
Established 2019
The Rick Sypolt Land Surveying Scholarship is named after Professor Rick Sypolt, who taught forestry and surveying courses for 40 years at the Department of Land Resources. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student who is a freshman, sophomore or junior in the Land Surveying program at Glenville State University. The students should have a GPA of 3.0 at the time of application. Recipient of the scholarship will be selected by the faculty and staff of the Department of Land Resources.
Robert and David Moore Scholarship
Established 1997
The Robert and David Moore Scholarship Fund was established by Joyce R. Moore as a memorial to her husband, Robert, and son, David. This scholarship provides financial assistance to students who elect to study forestry, natural resources or environmental sciences. Preference is given to students from Webster County.
Samuel Elliott Robinson Scholarship
Established 2007
This scholarship was established by DeVona and Marshall Robinson in memory of their late infant son. This award is made on the recommendation of the staff of the Department of Land Resources at Glenville State University and is awarded to a Land Surveying student. Its secondary purpose is to support scholarships for dependents of employees of Allegheny Surveys, Inc. or its successors.
Thomas J. Clower Memorial Scholarship
Established 1987
This scholarship was established by the Westvaco Foundation Trustees to benefit families of independent pulpwood or chip suppliers who have suffered some type of adversity, either on or off the job. Recipients are high school graduates who are the sons or daughters of a long-time independent pulpwood or chip supplier to Westvaco and who elect to enter any of the forestry majors that Glenville State University has available.

Abandoned Mine Lands Scholarships
NAAMLP is a non-profit, professional organization that promotes the reclamation and restoration of lands affected by abandoned mining throughout the nation. Title IV of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) established the national Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Reclamation Program administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE). A purpose of SMCRA is to reclaim land and water resources adversely affected by past coal mining and left abandoned and inadequately restored. SMCRA levies fees on active coal production to pay the reclamation costs. The fees are deposited in the AML Trust Fund and distributed to authorized States and Tribes to implement their own programs. NAAMLP is the professional association of States and Tribes who work under the auspices of Title IV of SMCRA. The $2,500 NAAMLP Scholarship is to assist in the education of students whose intention is to work as scientists, engineers or technicians in the field of mine land reclamation, environmental sciences or remediation.

Appalachian Vegetation Management Association Scholarships
The Dr. Kenneth Carvell Student Award - The associations’ primary student assistance gift of $3,000.00 to honor Dr. Ken Carvell, WVU Professor Emeritus, Forestry, for his contributions to this industry and for his support and guidance to this association.
The Roger Latham Memorial Student Award - This award in the amount of $2,000.00 is given in memory of Dr. Roger Latham a former PA Game Commission Research Director and outdoor sportswriter for the Pittsburgh Press. An outdoors man that enjoyed fishing, hunting, photography. A true conservationist that worked tirelessly with many groups to benefit all who love the outdoor experience. A supporter of the principals of integrated vegetation management.

Bonnie Appleton Memorial Scholarship
The Bonnie Appleton Memorial Scholarship Program was established by the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (MAC-ISA) and Trees Virginia, to honor the memory of Dr. Bonnie Appleton. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support to a student majoring in urban forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, or nursery management.
Dr. Bonnie Lee Appleton had a true love of science and a passion for horticulture and arboriculture that was evident in everything she did. She was internationally known and respected and recognized often for her contributions to arboriculture, horticulture and academia. Scholarship award amounts are $5,000 each, to be paid in two increments, one in the fall semester, one in the spring (Second payment is contingent upon re-enrollment and GPA standards being met). The award is non-renewable, and no applicant may receive more than one award from this program. All awards will be paid directly to the educational institution attended by the recipient in two equal payments. Awards may only be applied to tuition expense and applicants may not request scholarships greater than the anticipated amount of their tuition expense for the academic year in which the grants will be paid.

The Hagan Scholarship
The Hagan Scholarship is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship for high achieving, self-motivated students. The scholarship provides up to $6,000 each semester, for up to eight consecutive semesters, to help recipients graduate college debt free. Recipients must graduate from a public high school and enroll at a four-year-non-for-profit college or university the first semester following high school graduation.

Mid-Atlantic Chapter, International Erosion Control Association (MAC-IECA) Collegiate Scholarship Award
The purpose of this scholarship is to assist undergraduate students within a designated field of study associated with Erosion and Sediment Control with tuition expenses.

National Society of Professional Surveyors
Each year, through the National Society of Professional Surveyors Foundation (NSPSF), over $30,000 in scholarships funded by a variety of individuals, companies, and organizations are made available to encourage and support college education in geospatial sciences. These scholarships are a great opportunity for college students in surveying, mapping, geographic information systems, and geodetic science programs.

Railway Tie Association Scholarship
The Railway Tie Association, a railroad supply organization, has a vested interest in the continued improvements of all railroad-related products. Meeting the challenge of the railroad industry in the decades ahead will require high-quality products and the foresight, determination, and technical expertise of supplier management. To help meet these needs, the RTA wishes to assist future industry leaders. We offer two scholarships of $2,000.00 each.

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Wildlife Leadership Award
The mission of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) is to ensure the future of elk, other wildlife, their habitat and our hunting heritage. Included in the hunting heritage part of this mission is supporting the education and development of wildlife professionals grounded in the North American Model of Wildlife Management. The RMEF Wildlife Leadership Awards (WLA) scholarship program was established in 1991 to "recognize, encourage and promote leadership among future wildlife management professionals." The awards are presented to undergraduate wildlife students, and currently provide a $5,000 scholarship and a one-year membership to RMEF.

WV Christmas Tree Growers Association (WVCTGA) Arnold Spitzen Memorial Forestry Scholarship
This $500 scholarship is in memory of Arnold Spitzen. For many years he managed a Christmas tree farm in Jefferson County. Arnold was a long time, dedicated Board member and President of the West Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association (WVCTGA). The scholarship will be available annually to a forestry major based on academics and need. Recipients can be awarded the scholarship for a maximum of two years.
