West Virginia teachers strike again

Striking teachers

On February 19, there was another teacher strike, but this one was not over the inadequate payment of teachers. This time teachers, students, and some adults stood against charter schools. A new bill that was drifting through the government contained not only a pay raise for teachers, but also some funding for several new charter schools. Many teachers opposed this measure because it would likely take funding from already existing public schools, as it has in other states. Many schools already struggle with funding for school supplies, teacher pay, feeding the children, and general maintenance of the building. Many schools in Denver are already lacking in textbooks and their buildings are said to contain roach infestations and holes in the ceilings. Even some schools in West Virginia are struggling already to pay for supplies such as books.

The teachers organized quickly to make a difference in the government’s decision, and went on strike for two days with much support from students and many adults. The West Virginia teachers have been an example to teachers in many other states, and because of their influence, Forbes included them in a list of the world's 50 greatest leaders, ranking them 31st.

Unfortunately, not everything that came from this was positive. The strikes had made life a little harder for some substitute teachers who were new graduates from college and are currently living from only substitute paychecks. It might have also hurt some students in the process of getting their education degree due to the inability to work as a student-teacher.

There was also the positive and negative feedback to the strike given on social media. Most comments were incredibly positive and supporting the teachers. Even with the positivity there have been some negative comments about the strike as well, much like everything else in life.

In the end, what’s really important is how this will affect the future for the education system and those involved in it. The omnibus bill was eventually tabled and left to die, while the legislature debated a "clean pay raise" bill that would grant raises to teachers, school service personnel, and state troopers. Stay tuned!
