Throughout the past few weeks, the Student Government Association moved to edit their Constitution in order to “simplify” it. The recommended change at hand is to remove the required student academic department representatives in SGA.
This raised many eyebrows to those who chose to attend to sit in on this particular meeting. The main reason is that while the requirement for student academic department representatives is being amended, nothing is being done about student athletic representation. When asked why this was, two speaking members in SGA said that it was because the entirety of SGA is made up of academics and not everyone on campus is an athlete.
In the recording, Jasmine Tarman asked for all athletics to raise their hands to make themselves known. Those present reported that only one student raised their hand.
Still, those sitting in on the meeting weren’t convinced that this decision was a good one. But for every question as to why this is happening the same answer was being given. SGA is made up of academics. Every student on campus is an academic, even if they weren’t all from the same discipline. Also, according to the Student Government Officer Team, keeping athletic department representatives wouldn’t change the representation of the departments because SGA meetings are always open and anyone from any department can come in if they want.
“But academics could just walk in too,” Abby Mayle proposed.
Later in the week, the proposed amendment was passed as, according to Sadie Murphy, “The Constitution was passed. Dr. Morris and Nelson seemed to find it unreasonable.”
