Glenville State College has recently had a new team on campus, esports. It is a multiplayer video game played in front of spectators and it is a new trend taking over the world. Coach Logan Harris is super excited about the team's success in its first year. Harrison states they are currently in playoffs for Xbox Madden. One of the players, Romnn Shell, is ranked number two in the nation and is one of the four players remaining in the playoffs.
Shell will be playing April 23 in the championship game.
“I’m happy to be part of esports team and excited that I’m the person who is paving the way for glenville state college esports team to be recognized,” Romnn told The Pheonix about the upcoming event.
The program started in Fall of 2020. Students have the choice of being varsity, junior varsity and recreational. Varsity athletes are eligible for scholarships based of ability. The team takes part in games such as Super Mario, Madden, FIFA, and NBA 2K.
The arena is located in the Mollahan Center beside the post office. It is equipped with PC’s and other consoles for gaming purposes, plus a virtual reality area. If any student is interested in taking part of the team, contact Harrison at Logan.Harrison@glenville.edu or (304) 881-0725.
