The Board of Governors intends to amend or repeal the policies which are listed below and may be accessed by clicking on the link provided at the end of the article.

For many, the amendments and repeals on the policies may be hard to understand or comprehend. The wording may seem to be chosen specifically for that reason: to confuse the average reader. However, policies of public institutions must be written to legal standards.

Proposed changes to Personnel Policy 18 is one item that has sparked controversy on campus. The original and proposed changes are:

ACADEMIC FREEDOM, PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY, PROMOTION, AND TENURE

18.3. Faculty: Ranks and Definitions

  • 11.1. All faculty shall receive yearly written evaluations of performance directly related to duties and responsibilities as defined by the institution, such evaluations to be made normally by the department/division chairperson provost or his/her designee or the equivalent.

The proposed change written above will transfer the responsibility of evaluating professors from the department chair to the provost, who does not have the same level of day-to-day interaction with the professors and students. The provost also has heavy administrative responsibilities, which could move the evaluations to a lower perch on the priority list.

Final draft policies will be presented to the Board of Governors at its February 5 meeting. If approved by the board, there will be another opportunity for comment during the formal 30-day comment period.

The Phoenix recommends that you click the link below and read the proposed changes.
