It is no secret that parking has always been a hot subject on campus, whether it be passes, tickets, or not enough space. However, recently there has been an increased amount of towing on campus. Many students are clueless as to why this is happening to them. Most see the parking arrangements as unfair. Some passes, like for the Riverfront residents, only allow those drivers to park at Riverfront dorms and nowhere else, while residents of other dorms could legally park on campus. The main question is if the policies made by former president Dr. Tracy Pellet have been cut due to his departure from Glenville State College. Bradley Benson, a security guard in the Public Safety Office, said, “As far as I know, parking rules have not changed and I have not been told anything new.” He added, “The people who are getting towed on campus are parking in reserved spots."
Is this the case for everyone? The Phoenix reached out to students about their recent parking experiences. Tiley Miller, a freshman, said “This semester alone my car has been towed twice.” She reports overhearing a conversation between public safety officers at the time of the towing saying, “I’m getting these cars towed because there is nothing else to do.” She went on to say, “Students get tickets daily for parking on campus even in spots that aren’t marked, or they're getting their cars towed because they’ve gotten too many tickets that they didn’t have the money to pay."
Are our parking policies truly acceptable? Should we keep ignoring the countless complaints of our students at GSC or are we going to finally acknowledge the issues we have with this system and do what is best for the Glenville State College communities?
