Glenville, WV – Glenville State College’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSC-GSA) student organization will be hosting a presentation by Dr. Jim Nolan titled ‘Hate Crimes’ on Thursday, October 8th. Nolan will focus on the prevention of and how to deal with such incidents. There will be three available times to attend this event: 12:20 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 5:00 p.m. Each presentation is open to students, faculty, and interested community members and will be held in the GSC Mollohan Campus Community Center (MCCC) Multipurpose Room 315A.

Dr. Jim Nolan is the Assistant Professor in the Division of Sociology and Anthropology at West Virginia University. Nolan is a graduate of the FBI Academy and is the former Chief of Crime Analysis Research and Development along with the FBI Criminal Justice Information Services (CJOS) Division Unit. He is nationally recognized for his expertise in the psychology behind and the prevention of hate crimes.

“We are so fortunate to have this event funded by a Social Justice Grant from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. This is a speaker that students, staff, and community members will surely want to hear,” said GSC Assistant Professor of Social Work and Sociology Dr. Ida Mills.

The GSC-GSA is a special interest group dedicated to the safety and well-being of Glenville State College students who are dealing with sexual identity issues. The organization’s three fundamentals are: Support, Acceptance, and Friendship. Meetings are held on Monday nights at 7:00 p.m. in the MCCC Multipurpose Room 315A and open to anyone who wishes to attend.

The GSC-GSA will also be holding Safe-Zone training on October 17th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for individuals who wish to become a refuge and peer counselor to students in need. This training will be held in MCCC Multipurpose Room 315A.
