WV DANCE COMPANY TO PERFORM AT GSC
Glenville, WV—The West Virginia Dance Company will take the stage at Glenville State College’s Fine Arts Auditorium on Tuesday, October 17th at 7:30 p.m. WVDC began in 1977 and has performed extensively in West Virginia as well as thirteen other states and Brazil.
The group is made up of highly-trained and seasoned professionals who blend entertaining and thought-provoking works that generate enthusiasm in audiences of all ages. This season’s performers include co-artistic director Donald Laney, Stephanie Nerbak, Sara Workman, Margaret Lin Ryder, Sarah Morgan, and James Anderson. Tonry Lathroum is the lighting designer and technical director.
The upcoming concert will highlight indigenous themes of West Virginia’s rich cultural history as well as a work from West Virginia Partner of the America, Dr. Eluza Santos. James Anderson will perform choreography by Toneta Akers-Toler to the folk tune of “John Henry” that is arranged and performed by West Virginia musician Ron Perrone. “Sketches of Fall,” choreographed in 1991 in celebration of Pearl S. Buck’s 100th birthday, will begin the evening to music composed and performed by Ravi Shankar and Phillip Glass. The concert will end with “Black Beans with White Rice” choreographed by Dr. Eluza Santos from Brazil, who is currently a professor of dance at University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The concert incorporates works from four West Virginia choreographers ranging from the spiritually uplifting “Drifting Through Serenity” by Laney to the quirky, first happenings of a relationship in “Paraguas” to Heather Taylor’s dramatic work with an Asian them based on the tangram.
“Pseudochomai” has an all female cast and focuses on the journey of women throughout time and different cultures. The power and dynamics of the movement coupled with the use of fabric delivers a visual intensity that invites the audience emotionally into the experience. Donald Laney will perform James Hansen’s solo, excerpts from “Ophelia’s Reclamation” to music by Jeff Buckley. Laney recently performed in Los Angeles and New York City debuting this work.
This program is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History and the National Endowment for the Arts with approval from the West Virginia Arts Commission on the Arts.
