Glenville, WV – West Virginia has an abundant offering of outdoor activities statewide and students at Glenville State College have the opportunity to travel and experience these through the GSC High Adventure Program. Providing trips in both the Fall and Spring semesters, the GSC High Adventure Program has become a draw for students, from both in and out of the state, to attend GSC.

“Our group has gone on many excursions since 2002 including rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, canoeing, horseback riding, skiing, and much more. The program is geared toward beginners but you can advance in skill after your first trip. The program’s participants have traveled extensively around West Virginia as well as out of state,” said GSC High Adventure Program Director Dave Bernier. This program is open to GSC students, faculty, staff, and community members.

“We have many students approach us because of how awesome the GSC High Adventure Program is. This is a great way for students to relieve stress on the weekends and be ready to conquer their week starting Monday,” said GSC Vice President for Enrollment Management Duane Chapman.

“The GSC High Adventure Program is great. It gives students the chance to learn skills and push themselves in ways they probably never thought was possible. The program provides an opportunity to get off the couch and see what great recreation and beauty West Virginia has to offer,” said GSC December graduate J.J. Ford, a native of Buckhannon, West Virginia (Upshur County). He is earning a Bachelor of Arts Education degree in Social Studies Education.

GSC also offers many high adventure electives including Introduction to Rock Climbing, Ski and Snowboarding Fundamentals, Canoe and Flat Water Travel, Map, Compass, and GPS Travel, White Water Skills, and many more. Students taking these classes may also earn an Outdoor Recreation minor.

In the Fall 2012 semester alone, the GSC High Adventure Program excursions included rock climbing at the New River Gorge, whitewater rafting on the New River and Gauley River, mountain biking, and zip lining in Fayette County; rock climbing at the Via Ferrata in Pendleton County; horseback riding and paintballing in Kanawha County; skiing at Snowshoe Resort and backpacking in Pocahontas County.

GSC High Adventure trips include fees which cover lessons, transportation, park fees, permits, rental fees, and guiding services when required. GSC High Adventure Program staff provides the equipment needed for the activities or rents necessary gear for the trip.
