Glenville, WVâA representative from âThanks! Plain and Simple,â an organization supporting West Virginia veterans, held an informational meeting at Glenville State College on Monday, March 3rd. The meeting explored ways that GSC might become involved in some of the organizationâs projects to support veterans that would be beneficial to both âThanks! Plain and Simpleâ and GSC.
Executive Director Anne Montaque gave a powerpoint presentation to those in attendance including GSC President Dr. Peter Barr and other faculty and staff members. The stated mission of âThanks! Plain and Simpleâ is to involve all West Virginians in showing recruits, soldiers, and vets that they are valued citizens. Montaque hopes to recruit some veterans attending GSC to get involved in some of her foundations projects. Dr. Barr discussed the possibility of involving GSC vets in some public service projects in conjunction with his Hidden Promise Scholar Program.
Also attending the meeting was Hershel âWoodyâ Williams, USMCR retired, West Virginiaâs only living Medal of Honor recipient. Williams was awarded the Medal of Honor for gallantry above the call of duty in the battle of Iwo Jima in WWII. âIt takes a long time to readjust after serving in active duty. We need to do everything in our power to help our veterans re-enter civilian life. It is vital that we have groups like âThanks! Plain and Simpleâ to support West Virginia veterans,â said Williams.
The top project of the organization is to fund and develop a national monument for mothers or parents of veterans that would be located in West Virginia.
