Glenville, WVâDuring his inauguration address back in November of 2006, Glenville State College President Dr. Peter Barr stated that
among his many goals for the institution was to increase enrollment and increase the graduation rate. In the spring of 2007, a student retention competition was initiated. The contest among the students enrolled in General Education classes was to see which classes would have the greatest number of students return to GSC for the fall 2007 semester.
On Tuesday, October 16, President Barr and his wife Betsy hosted the GNED Retention Awards reception in the ballroom of the Mollohan Campus Community Center. Awards were handed out to the top three teams in the competition. The winning team was the GNED 100.01 class of Professor Marcia Bolton, and the GNED 100.16 class of Professor Janet Bailey, who teamed up to have almost 70 percent of the students return to GSC this fall. Each member of the first place team received a Spring Break holiday package in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which includes transportation and lodging for their academic accomplishment. The team of Professor Wayne de Rossetâs GNED 100.05 class and Professor Nancy Zaneâs GNED 100.06 class took second place honors with a retention rate of about 65 percent. Each member of this team received a check for $200. Third place honors went to Academic Advisor Mary Alltopâs GNED 100.03 class, and former instructor Phillip Keithâs GNED 100.15 class, which teamed up with nearly 60 percent of students enrolling for fall 2007 classes at GSC. Each third place team
member was awarded a free GSC parking pass.
GNED classes are required for all first year students at Glenville State College. âThe GNED classes were developed to support student success as part of the Pioneer family. These classes are designed to aid students in their transition from high school to college, and afford them the greatest opportunity to complete their college education,â said Glenville State College Provost and Senior Vice President, Dr. Kathy Butler.
Glenville State College Vice President of Enrollment Management, Duane Chapman, also attended the reception to hand out Student Recruitment Awards. Under Chapmanâs program, any GSC student from the 2006-20007 academic years who recruited a student who enrolled at GSC this semester received a $50 voucher for the GSC book store or a $50 Wal-Mart gift card. Students were eligible to recruit up to three new students and receive up to $150 in awards. Nine new students enrolled at GSC under this recruitment program. GSC students Kayla Carder, Daniel Boone, and Kharity Harper, each recruited two new students. Rebecca Conrad, Samantha Phillips, and Trina Beall, were credited with recruiting one new student. Chapman plans on continuing this program during the 2007-2008 academic year.
