Women in STEM Workshop (click here to download a registration form)

Glenville, WV - On Friday, March 23 and Saturday, March 24 Glenville State College will host two events about pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). On Friday, a panel discussion will be held featuring several successful female scientists that is open to all students, staff, faculty, and members of the community. Saturday will include a STEM workshop for high school girls, in grades 9-12, and will feature hands-on activities from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Both events are free of charge.

Columbia University Professor of Physics and Co-Director of the U-Tech Center Dr. Kim Shaw, Ohio University Environmental and Plant Biology Department Chair and Professor Dr. Morgan Vis, and NASA Engineering Trainee Emily Certain will be on hand for the Friday panel discussion. Dr. Maria Angeles Fernandez Gonzalez, Professor of Geology, from the University of Oviedo in Spain will participate with a recorded message.

On Saturday, participants will have time to meet, hear from, and engage in hands-on activities with successful female scientists. Lunch, t-shirts, and door prizes will be provided to those who attend, as well as 'daycare' for parents while children attend the activities. The panel discussion and workshop are supported by a Diversity for Equity Grant from the WV Higher Education Policy Commission.

"All who are involved with this project are excited to have the opportunity to host this panel discussion and workshop. We hope it increases awareness of the opportunities for women to have a career in STEM," said GSC Department of Science and Mathematics Chair Dr. Sara Sawyer.
