GLENVILLE, WV â Twenty-six Glenville State College students, including twenty-three incoming freshmen, have been awarded scholarships from the GSC Foundation for the 2016-2017 academic school year.
Braxton County residents Brook Fincham of Burnsville and Jessica Beckett of Duck were among the scholarship recipients. Fincham received the Rosalie M. Lough Scholarship, the Jean Adams Smith Memorial Scholarship, and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. She will be majoring in early education and is the daughter of Angie Fincham. Beckett received the Honors Academic Scholarship, the Lorena Hefner Scholarship, the John C. Shaw Scholarship, and the Marge and Billy Burke Scholarship. She is the daughter of Melissa Beckett and has not yet declared a major at GSC.
Fayette County resident Trevor Wood of Oak Hill received the John C. Shaw Scholarship and the Fine Arts Scholarship. He will be majoring in music and is the son of Melissa Smith.
Grant County residents Larissa Henry of Maysville, Samuel Schell of Cabins, and Colton Watts of Petersburg were among the scholarship recipients. Henry received the Art Scholarship and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. She will be majoring in graphic design and digital media and is the daughter of Shirley Henry. Schell received the Fine Arts Education Scholarship and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. He will be majoring in music and is the son of Rhonda Schell. Watts received the Fine Arts Education Scholarship and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. He will be majoring in music.
Greenbrier County resident Myka Perry of Rainelle received the Alma Arbuckle Scholarship, the Gracie Viola Bosley Scholarship, the Isadore Nachman Scholarship, and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. She will be majoring in English and is the daughter of Cheri Perry.
Jefferson County resident Taylor Corey of Kearneysville received the Honors Academic Scholarship, the General Meritorious Scholarship, and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. She will be majoring in criminal justice and is the daughter of Jeffery and Wendy Corey.
Kanawha County resident Zachary Lively of Dunbar received the Honors Academic Scholarship. He will be majoring in general studies and is the son of Paxton and PJ Lively.
Lewis County resident Kurtis Gunter of Orlando received the John and Ida Warder Ray Scholarship and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. He will be majoring in biology and is the son of Jena Whiston.
Logan County resident William Adkins of Logan received the Fine Arts Education Scholarship and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. He will be majoring in music and is the son of Misty Adkins.
Morgan County resident Michaela Munson of Paw Paw received the Art Scholarship and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. She will be majoring in graphic design and digital media and is the daughter of Sharon Munson.
Nicholas County residents Julie Edwards and Caleb Wynne of Summersville were among the scholarship recipients. Edwards received the Rosalie M. Lough Scholarship, the Brook B. Callaghan Scholarship, the John C. Shaw Scholarship, and the Martha Jarvis Cottrell Scholarship. She will be majoring in early education and is the daughter of Cathy Edwards. Wynee received the Lorena Hefner Scholarship and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. He will be majoring in criminal justice. Additionally, Nathan Kincaid of Summersville received the Judith K. Young Potts Scholarship. Kincaid is a senior at GSC majoring in sport management and business education and is the son of Michael and Sandra Kincaid.
Putnam County residents Amiee Asbury of Hurricane and Joshua Brennan of Scott Depot were among the scholarship recipients. Asbury received the Honors Academic Scholarship, the Ella Murray Orr Scholarship, and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. She will be majoring in elementary and multi-categorical education and is the daughter of Jessica Asbury. Brennan received the Honors Academic Scholarship, the Madelyn Conrad Kidd Scholarship, the Ernest H. Smith Scholarship, the General Meritorious Scholarship, the John C. Shaw Scholarship, and the Fine Arts Education Scholarship. He will be majoring in accounting and is the son of Bryan and Debra Brennan.
Raleigh County resident Scott Barber of Beckley received the Fine Arts Education Scholarship and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. He will be majoring in music and is the son of Paula Carol.
Tucker County resident John Chambers of Parsons received the GSC Board of Governors Scholarship and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. He will be majoring in chemistry and is the son of Margaret Chambers.
Upshur County resident Sarah Gillespie of Buckhannon received the Judith K. Young Potts Scholarship. She is a senior at GSC majoring in elementary education and general mathematics education and is the daughter of Matthew and Rena Gillespie.
Wayne County resident Taylor Brumfield of Wayne received the Art Scholarship and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. She will be majoring in studio art.
Webster County resident Dorothy Davis of Diana received the Warden and Joanne Rice Webster County Educational Loan Fund Scholarship. She will be majoring in English and is the daughter of Robin Davis.
Wetzel County resident Colton Ring of Pine Grove received the Honors Academic Scholarship, the General Meritorious Scholarship, and the John C. Shaw Scholarship. He will be majoring in biology and is the son of Henry and April Ring.
Alexander Lucas a native of Parkton, Maryland received the Pioneering Appalachia Scholarship. He will be majoring in criminal justice and is the son of Stephen and Vicki Lucas.
Angelica Nicholas a native of Vancouver, Washington received the Pioneering Appalachia Scholarship. She will be majoring in criminal justice and is the daughter of Clarence and Tawana Nicholas.
Dallas Kilgore a native of Keedysville, Maryland received the Pioneering Appalachia Scholarship. She will be majoring in criminal justice and is the daughter of Lee and Cassandra Kilgore.
Hayley Olson a native of Richmond, Virginia received the Pioneering Appalachia Scholarship. She will be majoring in social studies education (5-9) and is the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Olson.
Kelly Stacy Jr. of Spring Hill, Florida received the Pioneering Appalachia Scholarship. He will be majoring in sport management and is the son of Kelly and Erin Stacy.
About GSC Foundation Scholarships
The Lorena Hefner Scholarship is named for Lorena Hefner who was born on September 3, 1908 in Burnsville, West Virginia and was one of eleven children. She graduated from GSC in 1941 and began her teaching career in Braxton County at the Bragg Run School. While never forgetting her roots, she established the Lorena Hefner Scholarship for students attending Glenville State College who are from Braxton County.
The John C. Shaw Scholarship was established in 1985 by John C. Shaw, who was the President of Glenville State College from 1901-1908. This scholarship is awarded to academically talented freshmen from West Virginia.
The Jean Adams Smith Memorial Scholarship was established in 1996 by Dr. David W. Smith and the family and friends of Jean Adams Smith to provide scholarships to students from central West Virginia majoring in Early Childhood Education. Preference is given to students from Gilmer County.
The Rosalie M. Lough Scholarship was established in 2015 by the late Rosalie M. Lough, a long time educator in Braxton County, to be awarded to Glenville State College education majors.
The Gracie Viola Bosely Scholarship was established in 2005 by the estate of Gracie Viola Bosely. Applicants are required to submit an essay to the Scholarship Committee for review. Awards are made in the following priority: graduates of Grafton High School, other Taylor County residents, and then any other West Virginia resident.
The Meritorious Scholarship Fund was established through the GSC Foundation to award scholarships on the basis of academic qualifications.
The Honors Academic Scholarship is a component of the GSC Honors Program and is designed to help selected students develop scholarship, creativity, critical thinking, leadership, civic engagement, and academic enrichment in the classroom and beyond. To be eligible, students must have an ACT composite score of 24 or higher and a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or higher. Students who successfully complete the GSC Honors Program will receive special distinction on their transcripts and during graduation ceremonies.
The John and Ida Warder Ray Scholarship fund was established in 1992 in memory of John Warder Ray by Ida Warder Ray. Its purpose is to support worthy, talented, industrious, and needy students graduating from Lewis County High School in Weston, West Virginia.
The Ella Murray Orr Scholarship was established in 1985 in memory of Ella Murray Orr for scholarships to be used in her field of special education. Mrs. Orr was a 1934 graduate of Glenville State College.
The Warden and Joanne Rice Webster County High School Educational Loan Fund was established to provide support for graduates of Webster County High School to attend Glenville State College.
The Billy B. and Marjorie Hardman Burke Scholarship was established in 2001 by the Burkes. They have been leaders in government for many years and are long-time friends of the College. The scholarship is awarded to an incoming (first year) female athlete from Braxton or Gilmer counties participating on the women's basketball, volleyball or softball teams, based on recommendations from respective coaches.
The Madelyn Conrad Kidd Scholarship was established by United States District Judge William M. Kidd in honor of his wife, Madelyn Conrad Kidd. The purpose of this scholarship is to support students of GSC who show academic promise in English and math and who are residents of West Virginia.
The Ernest H. Smith Scholarship was established in 1994 to support students who are studying in the field of business.
The Brooks B. Callaghan Scholarship was established in 1985 in memory of Brooks B. Callaghan to provide scholarships to GSC students from Nicholas County based on academic performance. Mr. Callaghan was a native of Richwood and graduated from Glenville Normal School in 1942.
The Martha Jarvis Cottrell Memorial Scholarship was established in 2001 through the estate of Martha Jarvis Cottrell. As an alumna, she wished to express her appreciation to the College through the creation of this scholarship fund. The scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman with academic promise who aspires to become a teacher.
The Alma Arbuckle Scholarship was established in 1978 by the Alma J. Arbuckle estate. Arbuckle was a graduate of Glenville Normal School and was hired as a college librarian where she worked until her retirement in 1955. Although originally intended for library science students, today her scholarship is mainly awarded to English majors.
The Isadore Nachman Scholarship was established in 2001 in memory of Isadore Nachman. This scholarship is awarded to a student in the fields of journalism or English.
The Judith K. Young Potts Scholarship was established in 2000 to assist senior students who are completing their student internship semester at Glenville State College. It is the intent of this scholarship to select a student who shows promise of making significant contributions as a teacher in West Virginia, be in good standing with the college, and have written recommendations from at least three professors. Preference will be given to students with financial need from Braxton County High School first, then Nicholas, Upshur or Jackson Counties. In the event that no student from these counties is available, the college will select a West Virginia student who meets the other criteria.
