GLENVILLE, WV - Several months ago, the Gilmer County Farm Bureau received a $10,000 grant to help establish a nature trail behind Morris Stadium at Glenville State College. Thanks to countless donors and volunteers, phase one of that trail project has now been completed.
Representatives from Glenville State College, the Gilmer County Farm Bureau, the West Virginia Association of Conservation Districts, the Natural Resource Conservation Service, the West Virginia Conservation Agency’s West Fork Conservation District, and many individual donors and volunteers gathered at GSC in early November for an official ribbon-cutting for the Pioneer Nature Trail.
The initial opening includes around 1,200 feet of walkable trail, a picnic table, several birdhouses donated by the Gilmer County Girl Scouts, an informational kiosk, and a sign marking the trailhead donated by Don and Glendora Hedley. The trail honors the community service of Rita and the late Denzil Huff.
“Projects like this one are wonderful opportunities to celebrate partnerships and collaborations that make the heart of West Virginia so special,” said Dr. Kathleen Nelson, GSC’s Interim President.
The trail will eventually connect to another existing trail with plans for it to be used not only for those seeking a scenic stroll or for wellness activities, but also for the cross country teams at Gilmer County High School and Glenville State. Future phases for the trail call for the addition of a small walking bridge, a rock water fountain, and a gazebo to enjoy the view at the trail terminus.
Special thanks to all of those who donated their time and money to the project so far, including: Don Bailey, Jane Collins, Pat Nestor, Chester Sholes, Tom Snyder, Rick Sypolt, Waco Oil and Gas, Frank and Linda Waldeck, and many others.
