GLENVILLE, WV - New Glenville State College (GSC) students are acclimating to college life this weekend as they take part in the orientation process for incoming freshmen.
New Pioneer Orientation is designed to help new students create meaningful connections, become familiar with policies and procedures at Glenville State, connect with the caring and dedicated professionals across campus, and become informed of the services GSC provides.
The orientation process, which began on Friday, August 14 and continues through Sunday, August 16, includes information all students need to know and is part of the GSC 100 course. That course, also known as “The First-Year Experience,” is taken by all degree seeking students during their first semester at Glenville State College. It is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to make a smooth transition to the diverse academic, intellectual, and social culture of college life.
As part of New Pioneer Orientation, GSC traditionally welcomes new students to campus with a formal ceremony known as Convocation. Due to Coronavirus precautions and the large gathering of new students, administrators, and faculty that a Convocation ceremony would entail, a virtual ceremony was produced that students were able to watch in their first GSC 100 group meeting.
The virtual ceremony included remarks from GSC President Dr. Mark A. Manchin and welcome messages from faculty, staff, and the College’s Board of Governors. Students also committed themselves to the Glenville State College Oath of Academic Excellence as part of the ceremony. Consistent with its mission, the College expects all members of the campus community to conduct themselves in a professional, ethical, and lawful manner. As such, new students commit to abide by the principles contained in the Oath of Excellence which include Freedom of Speech, Civil and Human Rights, Cultivation of Character, Academic Integrity, Diversity, Social Responsibility, and Consideration of Others.
GSC’s Academic Success Center, alongside other campus offices, orchestrates New Pioneer Orientation. Throughout the semester the Academic Success Center also holds training sessions that are designed to help promote wellness, community, academic success, leadership, innovation, and inclusion. Those sessions include topics such as personal finance, financial aid, mental health, preparation for careers and/or graduate school, study skills and test-taking, setting goals, and more.
Various outdoor activities were held for students as well. Fall 2020 semester classes begin Monday, August 17.
