New GSC JASON Coordinator Pleased with Teacher Training

GLENVILLE, WV - Glenville State College recently held the first of three JASON Learning workshops for this year. Science teachers from eight different Hidden Promise Consortium counties came to GSC on Thursday, July 18th to learn about the new 'Climate: Seas of Change' curriculum. The instructors took part in labs ranging from ocean surface currents to measurement of water depth in oceans and water densities. Teachers also experienced how to use the online curriculum with lesson plans, assessments, and digital labs through the JASON Mission Center. The participating teachers were previously trained in the JASON Learning curriculum.

In the coming weeks, GSC plans to host additional trainings for JASON Learning's 'Terminal Velocity' and 'Climate: Seas of Change' on Tuesday, August 6th and Wednesday, August 7th respectively.

"The all-day workshop was great and my favorite part was learning about the wonderful activities that we can do with the kids in our classrooms. My students loved the hands-on JASON labs that I've used in the past, so I can't wait to take what we learned about the 'Climate' curriculum back to them," said Bertha Scott, a teacher at Coalton Elementary School in Coalton (Randolph County), West Virginia.

GSC also has a new JASON/Hidden Promise Consortium Coordinator in Mollie Ferguson. After five years of teaching at Tygarts Valley Middle/High School in Mill Creek (Randolph County), West Virginia, Ferguson was eager to share what she had learned about JASON with other teachers.

"I have personally used the JASON Learning curriculum in my own classroom since GSC first offered the training four years ago. It really engages the students, and they enjoyed learning," said Ferguson. Additionally, she was selected to be an Educator-at-Sea in 2010 and got the opportunity to work with JASON founder and Titanic shipwreck discoverer Dr. Bob Ballard. After the summer workshops are completed, Ferguson will be busy reaching out to new Hidden Promise Consortium counties and introducing those teachers to the JASON Learning curriculum as well.

Glenville State College first teamed up with JASON Learning in 2009 and has since introduced nearly 200 K-12 instructors to the curriculum. JASON Learning is a non-profit organization that aims to connect students to real science and exploration to inspire and motivate them to study and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.
