GLENVILLE, WV - Glenville State College student Gabe Maynard has recently accepted an offer to be published in the Spring 2018 edition of The Dangling Modifier. The publication is hosted by the Michigan State University Writing Center. He submitted his piece, titled 'The Culture,' after receiving a call for submissions.
"I was ecstatic when I learned that my piece was accepted. The first thing I did was call my mother; I was screaming with excitement," Maynard said.
He says his interest was piqued after seeing the call for entries because of his long-term goal of being published. "The Culture" is a research paper that discusses how students with accents are often looked down upon and considered uneducated. "In reality, if we give these students a chance and create a culture of learning between both the teacher and the student, they will excel," Maynard said.
The Chapmanville, West Virginia native says, as a future English educator, he finds motivation in bringing his students together through literature. "Opening the eyes of my students to new worlds and possibilities is something that I take pride in. I hope to instill in them that same love of reading and writing that I have," he said.
Maynard, a senior, is an active member of Pi Gamma Mu, the Social Science Honorary, and Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society. He was also a member of the Pioneer football team for two years.
"I would like to thank everyone who has supported me through this process including Dr. [Melody] Wise, Dr. [Marjorie] Stewart, Dr. [Jonathan] Minton, Dr. [Megan] Gibbons, Dr. [Shara] Curry, Dr. [Ed] Wood, my girlfriend Fallon, my parents, Simeon Kees, and Sydney Vance," Maynard said.
"Writing and submitting this paper for publication is an excellent start for Gabe's professional and scholarly career," said Wise, an Associate Professor of English at GSC.
The Dangling Modifier is an international newsletter by and for peer tutors in writing and produced in association with the National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing.
