GLENVILLE, WVâThe Glenville State College Behavioral Science Club hosted a mental health first aid certification course for its students and alumni on Saturday, November 8th. During the eight-hour course, participants learned a five-step action plan to help loved ones, colleagues, neighbors, and others cope with mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, and substance use. Similar to traditional first aid and CPR, mental health first aid is provided to a person developing a mental health problem or who is experiencing a crisis until professional treatment is obtained or the crisis is resolved.
Those who completed the course, conducted by personnel from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, received a three year certification in mental health first aid.
Associate Professor of Social Work and Department of Social Science Chair Dr. Ida Mills commented, âThis training was a direct result of studentsâ request. Last spring several students who attended the West Virginia social work conference attended an introductory workshop about Mental Health First Aid training. They came to me and asked if we could have the training at GSC. It was great to be able to provide this training to students and recent graduates.â
