Long-time bluegrass performer honored with Vandalia Award

Glenville, WV – Buddy Griffin, GSC Instructor of Music, was presented with the 2011 Vandalia Award at Glenville State College’s commencement ceremony on May 14th. West Virginia Division of Culture and History Commissioner Randall Reid-Smith presented Griffin with the award for “distinguishing himself as a musician, entertainer, educator, mentor, and advocate for bluegrass and traditional country music.”

Buddy Griffin receives 2011 Vandalia Award

Griffin served as a volunteer to the GSC Fine Arts Department from 1997-2002, and has been a full-time employee ever since. Sutton is his hometown but he now resides in Cox’s Mill, WV. He is alum of Glenville State College and a regular on the Grand Ole Opry Stage in Nashville, Tennessee.

“I feel as though teaching young folks about their traditional musical heritage is my best position in my life. I am very fortunate to be able to do what I love and Glenville State College has made that possible,” Griffin stated.

Griffin was officially honored during the annual Vandalia Gathering on May 27th at the West Virginia Cultural Center.
