GLENVILLE, WVâGlenville State College is offering lifeguard classes from Monday, May 11 through Thursday, May 13 and then Monday, May 18 through Thursday, May 21 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The cost of the class is $125. Students can either sign up ahead of time or simply attend the first class which will take place at the campus pool in the Health and Physical Education Building.
All participants must complete a pre-course test on May 11 to be eligible to take the course. Stages of the pre-course test will include: a non-stop, non-timed 300 yard swim test of six laps using either the breast stroke or crawl (freestyle) swim, two minutes of treading water without the use of the hands, and a 25 foot swim and surface dive to retrieve a brick and then exiting the pool without use of a ladder.
The college also is offering a swimming instructor class that will be held over two consecutive weekends: Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and May 17, and Saturday and Sunday, May 23 and May 24, from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. The cost is $50.
Students must attend all sessions in order to pass each class, which includes equal parts coursework and pool time to apply the lessons learned in the classroom.
