GLENVILLE, WV - Glenville State College Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Marisha Lecea was recently participated in the 2018 John A. Maxwell Scholar-Diplomat Program in Washington D.C. The focus for this year's program was, "Understanding Refugees, Migration Human Rights, and the Rise of Right Wing Populism." The event featured meetings with leaders from academia, government, and non-profit organizations.

Lecea joined a select group of scholars from across West Virginia in the intense three-day program to enhance the understanding of international topics that are important to the courses that they teach. Lecea says that she plans on integrating information and ideas from the Scholar-Diplomat program into her political science and global studies courses at GSC.

"Participating in the Scholar-Diplomat program was an incredible opportunity for me to gain knowledge, contacts, and resources that in return will benefit Glenville State College students. Not only did we have access to influential professionals that are involved in current government and international affairs that provided timely and important knowledge to enhance our classes, but we were also exposed to a wide variety of career paths that help us better explain to our students the potential job opportunities that are available with their degree from GSC," said Lecea.

The Scholar-Diplomat program is sponsored by The West Virginia Consortium for Faculty and Course Development in International Studies (FACDIS). The mission of FACDIS is to promote undergraduate teaching of contemporary international issues, foreign languages, and to provide educators with opportunities for professional development. FACDIS provides faculty with new knowledge and innovative teaching methods, information about new and varied course materials, and resources for audio-visual and simulation materials. The Consortium supports course development, revision and enhancement in West Virginia's colleges and universities. The Scholar-Diplomat program is funded by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.
