Land Surveying Students Benefit from Equipment Donation

GLENVILLE, WV - Several Glenville State College (GSC) Land Surveying students now have more tools of the trade at their disposal thanks to a recent donation.

The Land Surveying majors received several pieces of equipment, including a measuring tape, plumb bob and sheath, compass, calculator, and gammon reel. The items were provided thanks to donations from Jason Cobb, Charles R. Sypolt, David Sypolt, and Zachary Hupp, with Precision Laser & Instrument Inc. (PLI), based in Cross Lanes, West Virginia, also donating equipment vests for each student.

PLI’s Jason Cobb said that his company is happy to be assisting the future surveyors in the industry. “A lot of great surveyors have come out of Glenville State’s program, and will continue to come out of the program. And there are companies out there waiting to hire them. The graduates will be as busy as they want to be,” he said.

The West Virginia Society of Professional Surveyors also donated a copy of F. Henry Sipe’s book Compass Land Surveying to the students.

The surveying students and the Department of Land Resources also extend thanks to Marshall Robinson, Charles R. Sypolt, David Sypolt, John Cooke, Jason Cobb, Thrasher Engineering, Greg Smith, Leon Mallow, and Precision Laser & Instrument Inc. for similar equipment donations made last year.

“The gifts given to each student consisted of several commonly used articles in the surveying field with a marketable value of over $250. This was a great help to these students and should be a good incentive for future students. Faculty and staff here in the Department of Land Resources hope for this generous gesture to continue in the future. Additionally, we thank all of the ones who donated this year and hope to gain more donors in the future, providing students a jump forward to being better prepared before entering today’s work force,” said Doyle Hupp, Lecturer of Land Surveying at GSC.
