GLENVILLE, WV - Glenville State College Assistant Professor of Land Surveying Jared D. Wilson received the West Virginia Society of Professional Surveyors (WVSPS) 2016 Surveyor of the Year Award during their annual convention February 18-20 in Flatwoods, West Virginia. The award is the highest honor given by the WVSPS and is voted on by past presidents of the society. “It is a great honor to be deemed worthy of this award. I have the pleasure of calling the best surveyors in the State of West Virginia my friends and colleagues,” said Wilson of receiving the award.
He has been an active member of the WVSPS since 2010; having served on the Board of Directors, as the Glenville State College Chapter Representative, President-Elect, and President. In his role with the GSC Chapter he helps the students involved in the group work toward expanding their knowledge of land surveying. He says they also perform community service, which will include roadway cleanup along Route 5 this year and focused on a campus cleanup last year.
Wilson, who resides in Grantsville with his wife Sheila and their son, came to GSC in 2009 after receiving a Master’s Degree in Engineering Technology in 2002 and a Bachelor’s Degree in Surveying and Mapping in 2001, both from East Tennessee State University. He had previously been employed by various state, local, and private land surveying firms prior to joining the GSC Land Resources Department faculty. Wilson is a licensed surveyor in West Virginia.
He says being selected to receive the award isn’t something he takes lightly. “The West Virginia Society of Professional Land Surveyors honored me with this award. Even though I was the recipient of the award, it is the students that I have the pleasure of teaching that made it possible. Students should be an inspiration to good educators; without them, we as educators, would be lost,” Wilson added.
The West Virginia Society of Professional Surveyors is the professional organization that supports land surveying in the state of West Virginia. The society focuses on providing education, outreach to the public, legislative participation, and support to members of the profession.
