GLENVILLE, WV - Traditional storyteller Karen Vuranch is bringing history to life at Glenville State College through her portrayal of historical activist, Mary Harris, in a presentation of 'Mother Jones: A Presentation on the Life of Mary Harris'. The drama, which is scheduled for Thursday, November 13th, at 1:30 p.m. in Room 315 of the Mollohan Campus Community Center, is made possible by a grant from the West Virginia Humanities Council and is being organized by the GSC Department of Social Science.
Mary Harris was a vocal and engaging early twentieth century promoter of the rights of coal mine labor through collective organization. 'Mother Jones' was an important personality in the fight to improve working and living conditions of miners and their families. Vuranch's performance of Mother Jones will provide a unique opportunity to learn about the lives of miners and their families and the strength and determination of one of America's early leaders.
Vuranch combines storytelling and drama to create an engaging presentation. From novelist Pearl S. Buck to chef Julia Child and children's author Laura Ingalls Wilder, she has been presenting historic female personalities for many years.
This project is being presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations do not necessarily represent those of the West Virginia Humanities Council or the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information contact the GSC Department of Social Science at (304) 462-4124.
