GLENVILLE, WV - Several Glenville State College artists are taking part in an upcoming exhibit that features participants who have been affected by mental health issues, either personally or through close friends and family members. The show, which is titled âDifferent Voices and Common Experiences,â will be on display at the Monongalia Arts Centerâs (MAC) Benedum Gallery from August 5-27, 2016.
Bluebird by Heather Coleman
Current GSC student Heather Coleman was chosen as the feature artist for the show. âThis show offers a positive expressive outlet for artists who know first-hand the challenges of acclimating to a norm that ignores mental health issues. As the daughter of an artist who lived with paranoid schizophrenia and ultimately succumbed through suicide, I value the lives and experiences of those who suffer with and alongside of loved ones with unique struggles,â said Coleman. âThis exhibit is fascinating to me, particularly as a behavioral science major. It really shows the connection between the arts and social sciences and makes me even more interested in the topic of art therapy,â she continued.
In addition to her studies at GSC, Coleman serves the campus as an employee in the Academic Center where she helps other students with career readiness, facilitates student employment on campus, coordinates tutoring services, and proctors tests for Disability Services. She enjoys decorating and creating art in her spare time and has had her artwork featured in GSCâs literary magazine several times. Her featured mixed media piece at the MAC exhibit is entitled âBluebirdâ and features collage, ink, and metallic pigment.
Other Glenville State College participants include current students Danielle Shepherd and Ezekiel Bonnett, 2013 graduate Sarah Normant, and Assistant Professor of English Dr. Marjorie Stewart.
An opening public reception is planned for Friday, August 5 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the MAC, which is located on High Street in Morgantown, West Virginia.
