Glenville State College Theatre presents William Shakespeare’s timeless comedy, ‘As You Like It,’ April 22, 23, and 24, 2009 in the GSC Administration Building Presidents Auditorium beginning at 7:00 p.m. each night.
William Herold of Pocahontas County and Whitney Stalnaker of Gilmer County play the leads in ‘As You Like It’ portraying Rosalind and Orlando, two lovers torn apart and hiding in the Forest of Arden. Orlando enters the forest only after Rosalind escapes the wrath of Duke Frederick, played by Gilmer County native Palmer Stephens.
Rosalind (Stalnaker) disguises herself as a man, Ganymede, in attempts to cover her identity. This works so well that she attracts the attention of a local sheepherder, Phebe, played by GSC Theatre newcomer Stevie Langman of Gilmer County. Phebe is followed around on the stage by another GSC Theatre newcomer Matthew Thompson of Kanawha County who is playing sheepherder and wimp Silvius.
Orlando (Herold) wanders through the forest hanging love verses to Rosalind upon the branches of trees. Rosalind as Ganymede finds these verses and offers help to the head over heels Orlando by posing as Rosalind and allowing him to practice his wooing with her as him. This creates hilarious conflict as Phebe devises plans in order to gain Ganymede’s love and has her faithful companion Silvius carry out the orders no matter how heartbroken he becomes.
A brilliant conclusion clears up all the chaos that erupts on the GSC Administration Building Presidents Auditorium stage. There will be plenty of laughter, intrigue, romance, and dancing to fit the needs of every audience member in the room.
‘As You Like It’ is recommended for all audiences. General admission is $3, while GSC students get in free. For more information about this play or GSC Theatre, contact Communications Professor Dennis Wemm at (304) 462-7361x7323.
