GSC Teacher Education Students Represent GSC at WVRA

Glenville, WV - The Glenville State College Department of Education had 11 student representatives who attended and presented at the 63rd Annual West Virginia Reading Association Conference, which was held November 15-16, 2018 at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

Katelyn Benson, Hannah Mick, Bethany Spelock, Amanda Lamb, Abby McCarty, and Holly Wilson, all members of GSC’s Early Education Student Group (EESG), presented a workshop called “I Can Do That!: Using Developmentally Appropriate Literacy Strategies and Hands-On Activities to Integrate with STEAM.” GSC’s EESG sponsors Connie Stout O’Dell and Dr. Shelly Ratliff accompanied the group.

Five other students, Morgan Dolly, Zach Lyons, Jessy Moore, Travis Myers, and Clayton Swisher from Dr. Shara Curry’s Teaching Reading in the Content Areas course, presented a workshop entitled, “All Teachers Are Teachers of Reading! Why do Content Area Teachers have to Teach Reading?” The group focused on various aspects of middle and secondary school literacy instruction, exploring instructional strategies in the areas of comprehension, vocabulary, and webquests, and the use of trade books.

“The group truly enjoyed the opportunity to attend the reading conference and to network with other professionals in the education field. I know the entire Education Department joins me in commending these students for their dedication and commitment to education,” said Curry.

Fellow conference goers, classroom teachers, reading specialists and administrators from across WV gave high praise to the GSC students for their teaching points and strategies that were used.
