Twenty-five students received Academic Achievement Awards at the 2009 Glenville State College Honors Convocation held on Wednesday, April 23rd in the Fine Arts Auditorium. The awards recognized students who have demonstrated exceptional academic accomplishments, made contributions to the Glenville State College Community, and have distinguished themselves among their peers, the faculty, and staff.

The GSC Department of Business presented Academic Achievement Awards to Seniors Jeannie Ann Fleming of Ritchie County, Mandi Jo James and Mary Elizabeth Jones of Gilmer County, Michelle Lea Norman of Braxton County, Holli Marie Owens of Tucker County, and Christoper Paul Somerville of Wirt County.

Five seniors received Academic Achievement Awards from the GSC Department of Education, Jessica Dawn Jaffre and Sonja Grace Meadows both of Gilmer County, Lutrisha Nicole Little of Nicholas County, Koa Michelle Murphy of Marion County, and Laural Anne Smith of Frederick, Maryland.

Senior Jessica Dawn Jaffre of Gilmer County was also honored by the GSC Department of English.

The Glenville State College Fine Arts Department gave an Academic Achievement Award to senior James David Messenger of Doddridge County.

The GSC Department of Land Resources presented Academic Awards to senior Andrew Chase Ballard of Jackson County, senior Laurie Michelle Rodriguez of Raleigh County, and junior Alex Michael Shifler of Boonsboro, Maryland.

The GSC Department of Science and Mathematics handed out Academic Achievement Awards to four students: junior John Brown of Gilmer County, junior Faith Nicole Harper and sophomore Courtney Renee Rose both of Braxton County, and Justin Marshall Neil who is a senior from Nicholas County.

Six students received Academic Awards from the GSC Department of Social Science: senior Tashua Marie Allman of Gilmer County, junior Amanda Brooke Davis of Nicholas County, senior Nicholas Graham Fish of Kanawha County, senior Shawna Lynn Forinash of Lewis County, senior Crystal Marie Spaur of Braxton County, and junior Chad Eric Strimel of Roane County.

In addition, Glenville State College Student Affairs presented three awards. The Outstanding Student Organization Leader Award recognizing a student who has made extraordinary contributions to the quality of campus life at Glenville State College was presented to senior Kindra N. Davis of Wood County. She is actively involved in campus organizations such as the Student Activities Board, Chi Zeta Phi, and Kappa Delta Pi. The Outstanding Student Organization Award recognizing a student organization that has made significant contributions to the quality of student life at Glenville State College was presented to the Alpha Theta Xi Sorority. The Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Award was presented to Dr. Jill Haasch, advisor of Alpha Theta Xi.

“These students are being recognized for their part in making Glenville State College the best small public college in the country. They are also representatives of the many students who make this college a special place,” said GSC President Dr. Peter Barr.
