GSC students join President Barr for a photo at the 'It's On Us WV' awareness event
GLENVILLE, WV â Glenville State College students, faculty, and staff took part in the âItâs On Us WVâ pledge this week. The goal of the ongoing program is to raise awareness about sexual violence on college campuses throughout West Virginia. The event took place concurrently with similar events at other West Virginia colleges and is part of a nationwide initiative to encourage people to make a commitment to help end sexual assault.
At the event, students and other participants posed for photos with placards bearing the hashtag #ItsOnUsGSC2016 in front of a banner emblazoned with logos of other participating colleges and universities in the Mountain State. This and other âItâs On Us WVâ events were scheduled in recognition of Aprilâs Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
The tenants of the âItâs On Usâ program encourage students to recognize that non-consensual sex is sexual assault, to identify situations in which sexual assault may occur, to intervene in situations where consent has not or cannot be given, and to create an environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported.
Students in GSC sorority Delta Xi Rho and criminal justice fraternity Sigma Pi Xi were on hand at the event serving refreshments and distributing literature. Campus Human Resources and Student Activities staff, who both helped coordinate the event, also were in attendance to answer questions.
Participants of the Glenville State College awareness event join students at many other schools across the country and dozens of celebrities in support of the White House initiative which has been spearheaded by Vice President Joe Biden.
