Glenville State Collegeâs very own Holli Owens, a sophomore majoring in accounting, is getting used to her new title of Ms. West Virginia. Owens, a Tucker County native, is quite overwhelmed and excited about this win. âIt is an honor to win Ms. West Virginia, a division for young women ages 20 â 26, after competing in pageants for only one year,â said Owens.
The competition took place on April 21st in Elkins and included personal interview, swimsuit and evening gown categories. Owens swept the competition with best swimsuit, best evening gown, and most photogenic. She will be appearing at various events throughout the state during her reigning year promoting volunteerism. When asked about why she chose volunteerism as her platform, Owens replied, âI have a passion for it. I have been involved in my local 4-H club for 12 years.â She will be attending the Ms. United States competition in Las Vegas from July 26th through August 3rd to compete for the national title.
When asked of the initial reaction from her hometown of Parsons, Owens stated that she has not yet been back since the victory. Owens said, âI am really excited to go home and see their reactions!â She also said that a few businesses in Parsons were actually going to close their doors during the week of her competition. They will be accompanying her to Las Vegas to cheer her on during the weekâs activities.
âSo many doors have been opened for me with this competition. I have been able to meet so many new people,â Owens said. Support has been received from the GSC campus as well. âEveryone on campus has been so supportive,â Owens stated. The big win has not gone to her head. Even though she is now Ms. West Virginia, she says she is still Holli.
