Glenville, WV– The Glenville State College chapter of Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) is participating in the international ‘Let’s Can Hunger’ campaign sponsored by Campbell’s. The Campbell’s ‘Let’s Can Hunger’ Challenge is a competition sponsored by Campbell Soup Company that challenges SIFE teams in Canada, Mexico and the United States to raise awareness of hunger, translate awareness to action in the form of urgent hunger relief, and empower those in need to defeat the cycle of hunger.
The GSC SIFE team has pledged to collect 5,000 pounds of non-perishable food items by mid-April that will be donated to local food pantries to help families in Gilmer County and the surrounding areas.
As part of the SIFE effort, students at Normantown Elementary School participated in a contest to see which class could collect the most food for the GSC SIFE group. One hundred and six Normantown students ( Pre-K-6th) collected over 600 pounds of food! Mrs. Coombs’ preschool group won the contest by collecting the most food. The twelve four-year-olds collected 152 pounds of food for their local community.
“We are very appreciative that the staff and students of Normantown Elementary School joined our effort to collect food for local food pantries. Their large collection has contributed a great deal to the success of our campaign,” said Lindsey Estep GSC Visiting Instructor of Business Administration and Faculty Advisor of SIFE.
The GSC SIFE chapter has also challenged the GSC faculty and staff to get involved by collecting food for the campaign. Collection boxes have been placed at various locations around campus.
