The Glenville State College SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) student organization and the American Humanics Student Association (AHSA) have teamed up to battle hunger this holiday season. Members of the two groups will assist the Gilmer County Volunteer Fire Department with the ‘Shop for Hunger’ food drive on Saturday, December 19th. Grocery carts will be set up along the Glenville Christmas Parade route to collect canned food to be given back to community food banks. The parade will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Main Street in Glenville.
This is the first of many food drives to occur as part of the ‘Let’s Can Hunger Challenge,’ an international competition among college SIFE organizations to fight hunger in their local communities as well as around the world. This competition is sponsored and judged by representatives of the Campbell Soup Company in the following areas: a team’s ability to organize and implement successful food or fund drives in their local community, demonstrating that the SIFE team assisted individuals or families in breaking the cycle of hunger, and developing and implementing an integrated marketing campaign to raise awareness about the issue of hunger. The competition ends in April with cash prizes as well as an opportunity to be featured in a Campbell Soup Company print ad for finalists.
