GLENVILLE, WV-Glenville State College Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Ross Conover recently published a scientific manuscript in The American Midland Naturalist on ‘Effects of Set-aside Conservation Practices on Bird Community Structure within an Intensive Agricultural Landscape.’

The American Midland Naturalist publishes scientific research conducted throughout North America. This journal is among the most frequently cited sources in journals of botany, general ecology, mammalogy, zoology, behavior, vegetation, wildlife management, parasitology, ornithology, aquatic biology, and other disciplines.

Conover’s article summarizes three years of bird surveys which highlight the importance of establishing diverse vegetation patches. Through his research and studies he determined that the patches of vegetation should be located in areas within intensive agricultural landscapes to enhance farmland bird abundance and diversity.

“I found this research to be particularly enjoyable because our results were readily incorporated into wildlife management decisions at the federal level and will drive future protocols in how we establish wildlife habitats in agricultural landscapes,” said Conover.

His studies took place in northwestern Mississippi on cotton and soybean farms and highlighted the importance of these set-aside habitats for bird species including Northern Bobwhite, Dickcissel, Mourning Dove, Indigo Bunting, and Eastern Meadowlark.
