GLENVILLE, WV—Glenville State College Associate Professor of Music and Fine Arts Department Chair Lloyd Bone was recently a featured guest lecturer for the Southeastern Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference (SERTEC) at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. The bi-annual conference is one of the largest low brass conferences in the country.

Lloyd Bone

Bone, who was one of approximately 40 invited professors and performers from around the southeastern region, gave a lecture on how to juggle the demands of a department chair position at a small college while teaching and still contributing to the tuba and euphonium profession.

“Through this lecture I wanted to encourage students to pursue administrative positions. Studies show that many people in the music business shun administrative positions because they think they will not have time for continuing pursuing their love of music. I also wanted to show students how diverse our field is and how there are so many creative ways that people around the world are pursuing their love of the tuba and euphonium,” said Bone.

In addition to his invitation to the SERTEC, Bone will be the guest conductor of the 2015 Mercer County High School All-County Band and next year’s Southern West Virginia Honor Band Gold Band guest conductor.

“These are great opportunities because they keep me in touch with the teaching techniques needed to work with today’s high school students which I can bring back to my classes at GSC. They are also great recruiting opportunities and promotion for GSC as they put me front and center with some of the finer students in the state of West Virginia. I also thoroughly enjoy getting to spend time with our alumni and other directors,” Bone continued.
