GSC Professor Judges International Conference
Sun Jun 22, 2008

Glenville State College Music Professor and Fine Arts Department Chair, Lloyd Bone, served as Head Judge for the

International Euphonium Solo Competition Young Artist Division at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference (ITEC) in Cincinnati, Ohio in June. Bone was the lead judge on a panel of five esteemed international euphonium soloists and educators from around the country.

Professor Bone also was one of a handful of euphonium and tuba professors from around the world to perform on one of two college professor recitals. As a soloist, Bone performed three works, one of which was a major world premiere written for him. The piece will be published by one of the world’s most respected music publishers.

The Glenville State College Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble, conducted by Bone, also had the honor of performing at the ITEC. The GSC Ensemble performed twenty minutes of a shared recital. The GSC Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble includes: GSC Alumni and Gilmer County High School Band Director John Lopez, GSC Alumni and Pleasant County Middle School Band Director Mike Sutton, GSC Alumni and graduate student at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro Scott Smith, senior Music Education Major Chris Cales of Summers County, junior Music Education Major Kenny Nolan of Maryland, sophomore Music Education Major Ryan Deems of Clarksburg, senior Music Major Travis Truax of St. Mary’s, senior Music Major Shawna Elmore of Spencer, sophomore Music Education Major Chris Baber of Summersville, and senior Music Education and Math Major Timmothy Walker of Elizabeth.

“Our ensemble performed extremely well and received many great comments from some of the finest brass musicians and brass teachers in the world. They played so well that we have been invited to perform an even larger program at the 2010 International Tuba and Euphonium conference at the University of Arizona,” said Bone.

Performing at ITEC is a major honor as this conference is only held once every two years and is the largest event in the tuba and euphonium business. Thousands of tuba and euphonium performers and educators attend the event and to be selected to judge, perform, and conduct at a conference of this magnitude is a great honor for Lloyd Bone and the GSC Ensemble.
