GLENVILLE, WVâGlenville State College Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Michael Bobic, recently published a book titled 'With the People's Consent: Howard Baker Leads the Senate 1977-1984.'
'With the Peopleâs Consent' explores Howard Baker's leadership in the United States Senate at a time when it was divided by partisanship and ideology. "The book features a quantitative analysis of Senate leadership through roll call analysis, an evaluation of the advantages and difficulties in roll call data, and a discussion of data used to evaluate Baker's leadership in the 95th to 98th Congress," said Bobic. "Senate leaders and those interested in Senate politics can learn much about how to lead a divided institution," he added.
The text addresses how the current instability of the Senate could be improved by looking at Bakerâs own success during a tumultuous time. Baker, who passed away in 2014, was from Tennessee and served in the U.S. Senate in the 1980s.
Michael Berheide, Professor of Political Science at Berea College said, "This book is a fascinating look at the style of a unique Senate leader and the most thorough guide to the empirical analysis of Congressional voting behavior availableâ¦no one interested in either should neglect this work."
"This book could not have come at a better time to offer lessons to current and future leaders on how to effectively lead the Senate without damaging the institution and its deliberative nature," said William Eric Davis, Professor of Political Science at the College of Southern Nevada.
The book was published in December 2014 and is available in hardback for $85.00, paperback for $36.99, and e-book for $36.99.
