Higher Education Day 2011 was held at the West Virginia State Capitol on Thursday, February 17th. Hosted by Dr. Brian Noland, Chancellor of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, and Jim Skidmore, Chancellor of the West Virginia Council of Community and Technical College Education, the annual event is designed to salute West Virginia’s higher education institutions and to inform students, policymakers, and the public about post-secondary educational opportunities in West Virginia.
Over thirty West Virginia colleges and universities set up displays in the upper rotunda of the West Virginia State Capitol Building promoting their institutions. Faculty, staff, and students from each institution manned their booth from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. handing out information, talking with the public, and visiting with members of the West Virginia Legislature.
The Glenville State College booth highlighted the unique Hidden Promise Scholar program which includes twenty West Virginia County school systems as well as the City of Belpre, Ohio schools. The GSC entourage attending the event included GSC President Dr. Peter Barr, Executive Assistant to the President and Hidden Promise Scholar Program Director Teresa Sterns, GSC Community Engagement Coordinator and Hidden Promise Scholar Program Coordinator Keith Barr, and GSC Director of Alumni Affairs and Special Assistant to the President Debbie Nagy. GSC was also represented by five freshmen Hidden Promise Scholars: Devan Snyder an Education major from Upshur County, Nick Lambert a Landman Technology major from Wyoming County, Travis Nesbitt a Criminal Justice and Computer Information major from Lewis County, Brittany Hanshaw an Accounting major from Roane County, and Sara Linger an Education major from Lewis County.
During the event, the GSC students met with acting Governor Earl Ray Tomblin as well as with some of the state representatives from their hometown districts. The entire GSC contingent was also recognized in the House Chambers by Majority Leader and 34th District Delegate Brent Boggs.
