Glenville State College President Dr. Peter Barr visited the Clay County Board of Education meeting on Monday, May 19th to promote the GSC Hidden Promise Scholars Program. Barr has been traveling to each of the thirteen counties that are participating in the Hidden Promise initiative.
After a short address to the members of the Clay County Board of Education, Dr Barr and his wife Betsy hosted a reception for the students who have been selected as GSC Hidden Promise Scholars. The students and their parents heard an explanation of the program, had a question and answer period, received a GSC T-shirt and ID card, and enjoyed cookies and soft drinks.
The Clay County students that have been selected as Hidden Promise Scholars are: seniors Johnny Peck Jr., Ethan Curray, and Thomas Young, sophomores Kenneth Chriswell, Rebecca Rogers, Joshawa Koch, Suerena Tanner, and Rachel Henderson, Freshmen Tyler Alley, Carly Triplett, William Jones, Steven Ware, and Matthew Goode, eighth graders Peyton Frye, Tya Fugate, Casey Burdette, Cole Emerson, and Montana Barker.
The Hidden Promise Scholars Program is an agreement between thirteen central West Virginia counties and Glenville State College to improve communications between higher education and K-12, increase ACT scores, and increase the number of college graduates. Each county school system selects five students in grades 8 through 12 to participate in the program. Glenville State College will provide academic support including summer camps, electronic tutoring, and mentors to work with the Hidden Promise Scholars. Every Hidden Promise Scholar that elects to enroll at Glenville State College will receive at least a $1,000 scholarship that is renewable each year.
Thirteen Hidden Promise Scholars attended Glenville State College in the first year of the program. Over sixty-five high school seniors are eligible to become Hidden Promise scholars if they attend GSC this fall.
