Glenville, WV--Glenville State College is honoring one of its own who has reached the century mark. The GSC Board of Governors has approved a resolution recognizing GSC alum Dorothy Peterson of French Creek, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday and the 75th anniversary of her college graduation.

Dennis J. Pounds, Glenville State College Foundation Executive Director and Vice President for College Advancement traveled to Peterson’s Upshur County home to present the framed resolution to her. “She was shocked and even cried tears of joy when I presented the resolution to her,” said Pounds. “She is so vibrant and healthy. I wish everyone had a chance to spend a few minutes with her to see how well you can live into your second century if you keep your faith and keep moving!”

“I attribute my century of living to my faith in God and eating the right foods,” said Peterson, who was born on June 9, 1907 in Bloomfield, Ohio and was married to Herbert Peterson for 58 years. She has one son, two grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Peterson graduated from Spencer High School in 1927 and earned a Student/Normal Certificate in 1932 from Glenville Normal School, which later became Glenville State College.

Ms. Peterson’s career began in Roane County, West Virginia where she taught at Linden, Blown Timber, Robertson Run, Laurel, Fairview, and Spencer Grade Schools. She became the first person in Lewis County, West Virginia to teach at the School for the Mentally Impaired and also taught in Lewis County at Vandalia and Jane Lew where she retired in the spring of 1969. Peterson’s hobbies include reading, painting, and cooking.

Glenville State College President Dr. Peter Barr says he and the members of the GSC Board of Governors express their gratitude and admiration to Ms. Dorothy Peterson for her years of success and accomplishments.
