Glenville State College will be honoring the life and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. in the Mollohan Campus Community Center multipurpose room on the third floor. GSC will be closed Monday, January 18 for the official observance of the federal holiday.
The Office of Student Life encourages all students, faculty, staff, as well as the general public to join together to celebrate the life and legacy of a man who promoted the principles of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility, education to all, and the importance of service to community.
The guest speakers for the ceremony are Cassandra Wilson of AmeriCorps Vista affiliated with West Virginia Wesleyan College of Buckhannon, West Virginia and David McCutcheon of the Patch21 Program of Jackson County. The ceremony will also include remarks from Glenville State College faculty members Dr. Elizabeth Oppe and Meredith Gillett.
The focus of this yearâs celebration is to engage the campus community in a Semester of Service which is part of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. One of the program areas aims to involve students in service-learning projects that improve access to and obtain benefits from computers and other emerging technologies. These include improving access for individuals with disabilities, those in low-income or rural communities, and in senior centers, schools, libraries, and other public spaces.
Dr. Kingâs holiday is seen around the world as a âDay of Serviceâ and a time to reflect on how each of us can serve our communities. On Saturday, January 23 a Service Day Project entitled âServicing Seniors through Technologyâ will be held at the Gilmer County Public Library in Glenville, West Virginia from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. This free computer workshop will provide awareness to senior citizens on how technology and the internet can help improve and benefit their daily lives. To sign up for the workshop please contact the Gilmer County Public Library at (304) 462-5620.
