Onick Lewis, Glenville State College Student Support Services Teacher/Counselor and Adjunct Sociology Professor was one of several students and recent West Virginia University graduates who were highlighted in the summer 2010 edition of the West Virginia Alumni Magazine.

Written in their own words, the article explains how West Virginia University impacted the lives of a these students and graduates. Lewis was asked to be part of the feature on ‘The Next Generation of Mountaineers’ after he appeared at WVU for a speaking engagement.

Lewis is a native of Jamaica, but grew up in the inner city of Washington, D.C. He graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 2005 and earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work with the emphasis on Social Policy and Administration from WVU in 2008.

After receiving his Master’s Degree he accepted a position with GSC with Student Support Services.

“Being a first generation college graduate myself, helps me relate to many students that I work with at GSC who are also first generation college students. I understand their struggles because I have been through almost everything that they are going through” said Lewis.

His work at GSC has inspired him to become a full-time professor. Lewis is setting his goals high. “Someday, I would like to be a provost and eventually a college president,” he said.

Lewis resides in Glenville with his two daughters Emily, age five, and Olivia, age one.
