GSC Criminal Justice Fraternity Takes First Place at Competition

Glenville State College students who placed first in the WVCJEA Conference crime scene competition: Aaron Parsons, Kyla Spencer, and Garrett Rinehart

GLENVILLE, WV – Students in the Glenville State College Criminal Justice Fraternity Sigma Pi Xi recently won first place honors in the crime scene competition at the annual West Virginia Criminal Justice Educators Association conference. Fourteen students traveled to the two-day conference which was held at West Liberty University in West Liberty, West Virginia. The GSC students formed three teams that competed against nine other teams from area colleges.

"This crime scene competition was an amazing opportunity for our criminal justice students to compete against their peers from surrounding institutions, challenge their abilities, and assess their current skill levels. I am extremely proud of all three of the teams that competed from GSC; their hard work and dedication from weekly practices was clearly evident," said Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Kelly Treece.

One of the three GSC teams mastered the competition in all three of the judged categories: practical application and processing of crime scenes, report writing, and oral presentation. That team was comprised of seniors Aaron Parsons from Walton (Roane County), West Virginia and Kyla Spencer of Williamstown (Wood County), West Virginia and junior Garrett Rinehart from Cumberland, Maryland. The trio placed second in the same competition last year.

"This year was a lot different than last because we already knew basically what to expect. We practiced twice a week leading up to the competition and it really helped the other two GSC groups that went this year. During the competition we processed a mock crime scene, created a sketch, and wrote our report. The next day we presented our findings to the judges. Last year was great when we came home with the second place spot but this year, winning top honors, was the icing on the cake. I am really proud of our team for sticking through these two years of hard practices," said Parsons.

Plans are already underway for the 2014 WV Criminal Justice Educators Association conference to be held at Glenville State College.
