GSC Summer Camps

Glenville, WV—The first annual Glenville State College Hidden Promise Consortium 6th Grade Summer camps were held in four different counties the weeks of July 6-10 and 13 -17. The free camps provided upcoming sixth grade students in Braxton, Nicholas, Randolph, and Wirt Counties the opportunity to participate in a fun and learning environment. Camps were held at Braxton County Middle School, Elkins High School, Summersville Middle School, and Wirt County Middle School.

The camps emphasized math and science skills and also included many other activities including: art and creative writing sessions with GSC Assistant Professor of Art Liza Brenner and GSC Major Gifts Officer Dr. Bob Henry Baber, modern and folk dancing with Buckhannon dance instructor Kat Ward, sports and physical fitness with GSC Assistant Athletic Director and Track and Cross Country Coach Cam Perry, and Criminal Justice activities with Amanda Davis, Max Beaubrun, Alisha Martin, and Alex Amick from the GSC Criminal Justice Department.

The camps are part of the continuing effort of Glenville State College and K-12 educators in central West Virginia cooperating to increase college enrollment and graduation. “There were a few adjustments that we needed to make as the camp proceeded, however we were very pleased with how the camp turned out. We will take what we learned from this first effort and use it to make next summer’s camps even better,” said Keith Barr, GSC Hidden Promise Consortium Coordinator and Community Engagement Program Coordinator.
