The Jefferson County FFA team was the winner of the 2010 West Virginia Envirothon, which was held at the Greenbrier County Youth Camp on April 22 and 23, 2010. In an effort to help prepare the Jefferson County team for the Canon Envirothon in Fresno, California later this summer, Weyerhaeuser Sutton OSB teamed up with the Glenville State College Department of Land Resources. Together they hosted a career and education day on June 10, 2010.
During their visit to GSC, the Jefferson County FFA students received training from Associate Professor of Natural Resource Management Dr. Milan Vavrek and Assistant Professor of Forestry Dr. Brian Perkins in the areas of forestry and species biodiversity. The students also toured the campus, learned about programs at the college, and were treated to lunch.
The West Virginia Envirothon is a conservation education program and competition for students in grades 9 through 12. The program focuses on five subject areas: forestry, soils, aquatics, wildlife, and a current environmental topic. Weyerhaeuser is one of the West Virginia Envirothon’s largest contributors; donating employee time and resources as well as sponsoring a scholarship for the winners of the competition.
