Glenville State College American Humanics Coordinator Meredith Gillett attended the American Humanics

Management and Leadership Institute (AHMI) accompanied by GSC American Humanics Student Association President Matthew Thompson and Vice President Brittany Williamson. This annual symposium was held January 3-6, 2010 in Phoenix, Arizona and hosted by the AH Program at Arizona State University. It is considered a capstone event which provides hands-on experiences through workshops and real case studies including internationally recognized presenters and speakers from the Nonprofit/Private Sector.

“Students and faculty alike were completely riveted by the dynamic presentations of Hispanic civil rights leader Raul Yzaguirre and DC Central Kitchen founder Robert Egger,” commented Gillett. “Yzaguirre and Egger motivated over 500 undergraduate and graduate students to take over the reins from their generation and continue their work through advocacy and humanitarian efforts in the nonprofit sector. It was an amazing experience for all of us,” continued Gillett.

AHMI began in 1973 and is an intensive educational symposium providing those who attend an opportunity to obtain career coaching by the nonprofit partners of their choice which may lead to job placement after certification. “A grand EXPO is held with representatives from AH nonprofit partners and various college/university programs; this event serves as great networking time for AHMI attendees,” stated Thompson.

“AHMI was a great learning experience. I think everyone interested in the nonprofit sector should become a part of American Humanics. I gained so much valuable information from the workshops and networking throughout the conference,” said Williamson. AHMI will be held in Orlando, Florida January 2011.

GSC has the newest American Humanics program dedicated to training and certifying next generation nonprofit leaders through American Humanics Certification and a Nonprofit Leadership and Management Minor. AH is an alliance of nonprofit organizations and over sixty colleges and universities nationwide. Glenville State College is the only institution in West Virginia to have the program for the next five years.
