GLENVILLE, WV – Members of the Glenville State University Boxing Team, Wrestling Team, and Athletic Training staff have made a $2,000 donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The donation was collected as part of the “Knock Out Cancer” fundraiser.
Over the past several years, donations have been collected during the annual War at the Waco boxing event. This year, members of the Wrestling Team helped staff the event and gathered donations. The campus Athletic Trainers were also on hand throughout the event.
This year’s War in the Waco was also the first pay-per-view event at Glenville State. The bouts – which have garnered over 500 views – were broadcast by Pioneer Media via the Mountain East Conference streaming platform, MEC TV.
“Since I started coaching boxing at GSU in 2015, the boxing squad has supported breast cancer research. When alumnus François Scarboro Jr. boxed for me, we decided to really make it a focus of boxing and to support breast cancer research by raising money and donating on behalf of the Pioneer Boxing Squad. He wore pink and we started the shirt sales to raise money,” said GSU Boxing Coach, Duane Chapman. “This year, Wrestling joined us during the War in the Waco VII by helping with set up and take down, concessions, 50/50, and selling shirts. Coach Dylan Cottrell and I hope to continue the tradition with both Boxing and Wrestling squads. This year’s donation is the largest to breast cancer research we have made to date.”
“War at the Waco is a tremendous event to be part of for the Sports Medicine Staff, including our GSU Team Physician Dr. Scott Meester who got to cover his first fight night this year. Not only do people get to learn about and appreciate the sport of boxing, but it is also an incredible event bringing attention to this great cause,” said Head Athletic Trainer, Katie Bishop.
“I have read that, on average, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every two minutes in this country. So, we know that this is an important cause and I am beyond pleased to see our student athletes, coaches, trainers, administrators, and community members come together in this way,” said Glenville State University President, Dr. Mark A. Manchin. “I feel confident that this donation will help save lives.”
The National Breast Cancer Foundation’s mission is to help women by providing help and inspiring hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education, and support services.
