Glenville State University Hosts County-Wide Veterans Day Assembly

The Military and Family Support Office at Glenville State University, in conjunction with Gilmer County Schools, held a Veterans Assembly on Thursday, November 7th to honor and show appreciation to veterans in Gilmer County. Through the involvement of Gilmer County Schools, students gained a personal understanding of the sacrifices made by those who have served, and Veterans received well-deserved recognition from the younger generation.

There were multiple speakers who shared their gratitude and recited poetry. GSU President, Dr. Mark A Manchin, spoke to students about the importance of remembering the sacrifice of all veterans, not just on Veterans Day, but every day. Senior Lecturer of Communications, Professor Jennifer Wenner, spoke of her personal experience in the military and honored veteran Dr. Ed Wood, former history and geography professor at GSU, who passed earlier this year.

The Gilmer County Elementary Choir and Band performed throughout the event, showcasing their talents and honoring those who have served. Trumpet soloist, Lindsey Kinder, also performed an emotional rendition of Taps. Other GCES students recited poetry and lead the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.

“It’s inspiring to see Veterans gathering alongside Gilmer County High School and Gilmer County Elementary School students,” stated Charles Yakubow, Director of Military and Family Support at GSU. “Events like this foster a deep sense of community, respect, and learning across generations. These kinds of assemblies truly honor our Veterans' contributions and ensure their legacy lives on in our schools and communities. I would like to give a special thank you to Gilmer County school staff for their assistance in organizing this amazing event.”
