Glenville State University Hosts 2024 Literacy Fair for Cabell, Calhoun, Gilmer/Lewis, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Randolph, Webster, Wyoming Counties

GLENVILLE, WV – On Saturday, October 19th, Glenville State University Hosted the 2024 Literacy Fair for Cabell, Calhoun, Gilmer/Lewis, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Randolph, Webster, Wyoming Counties. There were over 180 projects from students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.

“Glenville State University is proud to hold the Literacy Fair sponsored by the West Virginia Reading Association at the Waco Center,” Dr. Shelly Haynes, Past President of the West Virginia Reading Association and Associate Professor of Education at GSU stated.

GSU has hosted the Literacy Fair for the past several years. GSU students are given the opportunity to judge projects, serve as "runners" to take children to their projects, and the Early Education Student Group provides an activity table for the children while they are waiting for their projects to be judged. Education faculty were present to help where needed and to be ambassadors for GSU. The Admissions Office also  set up a table for recruitment.

When asked why she loved and supported the Literacy Fair, Dr. Haynes said “Every year the number of projects keeps growing, bringing more K-12 students and parents to GSU. At the heart of it all, the Literacy Fair encourages children in West Virginia to read and have fun doing it.”
